The serious side of funny books

4/24/2015

I'm so glad to see 'This Book Is Funny' gathering momentum and support. It shouldn't need to be argued that funny books are just as important as serious ones, or that the well crafted ones deserve to be equally lauded. Funny isn't just important; funny is vital. There's nothing wrong with a book about farts, as long as it's a good one.

Sometimes people ask me if I have a particular person in mind when I write. Yes and no.

No
I write to amuse: myself, families, kids - anybody and everybody. My personal tastes veer towards the popular (I've no qualms about sticking a bit of Coldplay on or sitting in front of Strictly). I hope in turn the work I create has very broad appeal.

Yes
I write for a boy I'll call Teddy. Teddy was in my class at primary school. He was playful, cheeky, a little bit naughty and a great deal distracted. This drove our teacher nuts. He often told Teddy off for one thing or another, I suppose it was usually fair enough. Then one day, he pulled Teddy up to the front of class and asked him why he hadn't done his homework, again.

I guess this time Teddy had had enough. He said, 'I'll show you why I haven't done it. It's because of this.' And he lifted up his shirt for all of us to see.

He was covered in bruises. Absolutely plastered in them. Front and back. All carefully placed where you'd never see them unless he chose to show you.

I remember it so clearly. Teddy fighting back the tears, his fierce defiance and bravery. The look on our teacher's face.

Life can be unbearable. For some of us, only for brief periods. For others, constantly. When I spend time in schools, I try and make everybody laugh because I know that there's absolutely no way of knowing what any of those kids might be going through at home. Hopefully never anything so bad as Teddy, but there are a million other things that can make a child anxious, sad or fearful.

Their parents' money worries. A house move. A poorly pet. Your mum being in hospital having her bowel removed so that she can never fart again...

Seriously. I cannot physically fart any more. That's tough, let me tell you. So bring on the books that are funny. Make us smile! Make us laugh! Make us LOL until our sides ache and the tears run down our faces, because real life doesn't always provide enough joy.

Wherever he is now, I hope that at least Teddy's adult life has been filled with laughter.

77,562 thank you's

I've been a little quiet, forgive me - Christmas removed any sign of routine from day to day life, and it feels like my year is only just starting. But what a start.

Yesterday was 'PLR day', the day authors and illustrators receive a statement from the Public Lending Rights team letting them know how many times their books were borrowed from UK libraries over the past year. Turns out my books were loaned out a whopping 77,562 times in twelve months. Wowsers.
My husband informs me that, if you got those library lenders together, they wouldn't quite fit into Old Trafford. So of course I have spent a good deal of time daydreaming about headlining a gig there, with a delightfully intelligent audience who all have exquisite taste.

My most borrowed book was 'Goodnight Digger', which by happy coincidence is tonight's CBeebies Bedtime Story at 6.50pm.

Thank you to the PLR team who work so hard keeping track of library loans. Most of all, thanks to the librarians who stock my books and to the lenders who take them home (and who absolutely do not tear them or scribble on them, right?) If I could give you each a hug, I would - and as today is International Hug Day, consider yourself gently squeezed.

P.S. I really struggled over whether to use an apostrophe in that heading or not, and I'm still not convinced I've got it right. Where's an editor when you need one?

Back in action (just about)

Ulcerative colitis: not the most fun

The black spot - very Treasure Island
Hello, friends. What a month. And before I start: I make no apology for the small pictures at the bottom of this post; I know they'll help more people than they offend.
I had my large bowel removed (yes, all of it) on August 16th by a wonderful surgical team at Bath RUH. Since then I've been getting over the effects of such a massive operation and getting to grips with my all-new body. Okay, so I've bounced back into hospital a couple of times along the way and I missed my son's first day at school, but nothing can keep me down.

I'm cured of ulcerative colitis and feeling much better than I have in years. I tire quickly, but apparently that's part and parcel of major surgery for about eight weeks. Come mid-October, I'll be fighting fit and back to writing properly.

A huge sadness has completely dissolved. I hadn't realised just how deeply my IBD had affected me, emotionally as well as physically. My life had been compromised, day in and day out, for so many years - but no more. Okay, so I have to live with a stoma for the rest of my life - but why mope about it? I've (re)gained so much more than I've lost.

LOST: Large and inflamed faulty organ - good riddance. Masses of nasty drugs - ditto. Excess weight - phew. Exhaustion. Sadness. Constant uptightness and never ending anxiety re. toilet proximity. Ability to eat nuts and mushrooms.
GAINED: Control! Vim and vigour! My old, slim(ish) figure! Hope! The prospect of holidays involving aeroplanes with absolutely no anxiety re. toilet availability! Excuse to eat Haribo at will - doctor's orders!
To fellow IBD sufferers out there: I hope medication or alternative therapies work for you; they didn't for me. If you find yourself facing frankly terrifying surgery and its body-changing effects, take comfort from me. On balance, it's really rather wonderful. Stay well, folks - and much love to @ColitisNinja and the brilliant #GetYourBellyOut campaign.
